Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good for the school. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford's first appearance on television was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
